Thanks to all who attended the September 2008 meeting of the Acadiana Open Source Group. Corey Bordelon's presentation on open source licenses was very well-received and spurred a lot of discussion regarding philosophy behind licenses and their effect on the economic impact of open source software. Announcements:
- The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, October 30, at the ACTR building on UL campus. Suggested topics include content management systems as well as a crash course in the PHP programming language. If you have an opinion on either, feel free to post it as a comment on this blog entry or in the forums.
- The Lafayette CampFiber will be held Saturday October 4 at the Travis Technology Center. It will include a segment for developers to discuss the technologies and platforms they use and potential impact of the LUSFiber project on their innovations. Admission is free but seating is limited, so register soon.
- This year's ApacheCon will be held at the Sheraton New Orleans November 3-7. Register soon if you plan to attend.
- A combined php|works / PyWorks 2008 Conference will be held November 12-14 in Atlanta, GA and its schedule has been posted.
- A seminar entitled Do It With Drupal will be held December 10-12 in the Marriot Hotel in New Orleans. Early bird registration ends November 1 and seats are limited, so register soon if you plan to attend.
- The Acadiana Open Source Group is always looking for sponsorship of refreshments or door prizes. Please contact Matthew Turland if your company would be interested.
All Acadiana residents with an interest in open source technologies are invited to attend the September 2008 meeting of the Acadiana Open Source Group on Wednesday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting will be held in the Advanced Computer Technology and Research building on UL campus thanks to arrangements made by faculty of the Computer Science Department for us to use their facilities. The exact room number will be announced once it is available, but signs will be posted around the building on the day of the meeting to direct attendees. Parking is available in Zone 13. Corey Bordelon will tentatively be presenting a talk entitled "Making Heads or Tails of Open Source Licensing." This talk will detail what open source licenses are, the various existing licenses under which open source software can be distributed and differences between them, and what licenses might be most appropriate for particular types of projects.
Apologies for the late notice, but events arising from the two recent hurricanes have made it difficult to organize this meeting. Please remember to help to spread the word about the meeting to family, friends, classmates, and colleagues so we can get a good turnout!

- The Acadiana .NET User Group will hold a meeting on Thursday August 28 at LEDA beginning at 6 PM. The topic of the presentation is "Embrace Open Source on Codeplex" and details Microsoft's open source project hosting web site.
- The annual Zend PHP Conference and Expo will be held September 15-18 in Santa Clara, CA and its session schedule will include a presentation by one of our members, Matthew Turland.

This meeting is unique in the lifetime of AOS because the meeting date and topic were put to a vote by its membership. Votes are in and, by popular demand, Matthew Turland will be presenting on the development of PHP-based web services using the Zend Framework. This presentation will be targetted at developers, but will include background information on the various web service protocols supported in Zend Framework as well as their respective framework components. Local open source enthusiasts are encouraged to be present and encourage future open source events to choose our state as their venue!
